Individual Assignment Task

Building on your group task, expand and critique, via a 1000 word essay, your view of the most important idea/recommendation to transform the future of Public Procurement.


Submit a copy via the Learning Central module link set up by the Hub by 11.00 (UK Time) on Wednesday 08/12/2021.


  • 1000 words (+/- 10%)
  • The reference list/bibliography should not be considered as included in the 1000 word count.
  • Write in an academic essay style, using 3rd person, and fully reference your arguments and points.
  • You may use subheadings, but it is not a requirement.
  • Include a beginning (your introduction), a middle (the main body of your essay), and an end (where you conclude).

Individual Task Feedback and Marking Criteria

The coursework mark will be structured using the categories below. Each will be assessed on a five point scale – Excellent, Good, OK, Weak and Poor. You will also receive some written commentary on your individual assignment.

  • For Scoping, Context and Understanding – Refers to the clarity of your explanation of your area of focus, scoping of the discussion and choice of topic, and for communicating its relevance to the transformation of public procurement. Is the area of focus interesting, relevant and appropriate? Does the work demonstrate understanding of the topic area?
  • For Argumentation and Critique – Refers to the quality of your reasoning and line of argument in discussing your chosen idea, substantiating your arguments, highlighting and reflecting on key issues, and reaching logical conclusions. This category will also incorporate the strength of your critical evaluation, which refers to the extent to which you assess different aspects of your area of focus (e.g. strengths, weaknesses, challenges, complexities). Is there evidence of clear, reasoned, systematic argument? Is there evidence of critical thinking applied to the topic area, informed by the literature?
  • For Structure, Style and Presentation – reflects the effort put into communicating your points and crafting your essay effectively. This includes the structure of the essay, such as flow, continuity and organisation of arguments, as well as a clear beginning, middle and end. It also includes style and presentation, which refer to the formatting of the essay, the written style and effective presentation of text or visuals. Is it well structured? Is it well-crafted and written? Is it well presented?
  • For Reading and Referencing – Relates to the depth of research undertaken for the essay. Credit will be given for evidence of effectively mobilising core suggested reading as well as your own independent reading, whereas poor referencing or plagiarism will be penalised. Is there evidence of wider reading around the subject area? Is any reading mobilised effectively? Is the referencing complete, appropriate and well formatted?
