Task details and instructions
Your Task
You are a consultant who has been employed to advise CC Music on the
effective implementation of strategic changes. You are required to
produce the following:
Part A:Analysis – Business Process Models and strategy analysis
In this section you should develop
1. A series of at least two Business Process Models to capture the
existing and your proposed business processes for CC Music. The
models should follow the BPMN notation (see for example,
http://www.omg.org/bpmn/Documents/Introduction_to_BPMN.p
df). It is recommended that you use Microsoft Visio to create the
models although you may if you prefer use Word, PowerPoint or
appropriate alternatives.
2. Strategic analysis for CC Music. You should use at least one
recognised analysis technique such as SWOT, PESTLE etc
Part B: Open Source Software Comparison Table
In this section, you should conduct research into a suitable software
solution for CC Music. You should decide on the set of characteristics
which you will use to evaluate the software and your research should
consider 4-5 alternatives in detail. This section should be presented as a
table.
Part C: Report
In this section, you should write a report which provides an overview of
the current situation for CC Music together with a roadmap outlining how
the proposed changes to the business can be achieved to the benefit of
the business. This should draw on your analysis in Part A, include your
recommendation for software in Part B, and provide recommendations
for ensuring that the strategy is effectively implemented, including
consideration of the challenges ahead.
This section, should follow standard report structure:
Title Page – Contents – Introduction – Main Section – Conclusions and
Recommendations – References.
Part D: Reflection on your contribution to the online discussion and wiki

https://www.coursehero.com/file/46075982/Assignment-instructionsdocx/
In this section you should submit a 250 word reflective summary,
accompanied by your own self-assessment of your contribution to the
online elements throughout the module, using the table labelled
Reflection Self-Assessment Pro forma in Appendix A (copy and paste it
into your assignment document). The reflective report should include
your detailed reflection, supported with evidence (pasted URLs) from the
online discussion and wiki, detailed below:
You should use appropriate theories, frameworks, models, that we have
covered in the module, to inform and justify your recommendations.
Use the RKC Class Forum Threads to Help With Your Assignment
The unit’s discussion threads should be used by you to explore the
assignment further. It is recommended that you use these to:
 Share papers and articles that you have found on relevant
topics (remember to include links / reference / pdfs if you do
this!)
 Discuss the changes to the ways of working for CC Music –
i.e. discuss what processes will change, and explore how
these might work in practice. You might also consider the
changing information needs of the business
 Discuss and share examples of Open Source software that
could be of use for CC Music.
Please don’t be shy in using these discussion threads – the
purpose is to give you experience of using collaborative
technologies.
A – Business Process Models and strategy analysis
Process modelling -The capturing of an ordered sequence of business activities and supporting
information. Business process describe how a business pursues its objectives
There are different levels of process modeling:
Process Maps – simple flow charts of the activities
Process Descriptions – flow charts extended with additional information, but not enough to fully define
actual performance

Process Models – flow charts extended with enough information so that the process can be analyzed,
simulated, and/or executed
A Business Process developed by a business analyst can be directly applied to a BPM engine instead of
going through human interpretations and translations into other languages
1. Simply put BPMN is a graphical representation of your business process using standard
objects.
BPMN consists of the following basic building blocks;
 Flow objects: events (circles), activities (rectangles with rounded corners), and gateways
(diamonds)
 Connecting objects: mainly comprising arrows, these indicate sequence flow (filled
arrows), message flow (dashed arrows), and associations
 Swim lanes: pools (graphic container) and lanes (sub-partition of the pool)
 Artifacts: data objects, groups, and annotations
A business process modeled using BPMN
Creately has a separate library with the latest BPMN 2.0 object included in the library. Plus you
get intelligent grouping elements, professionally designed BPMN templates and much more.
Check out how Creately makes it easier to model using BPMN.
The biggest advantage of BPMN is that it’s a standard with well-defined syntax. So many
business analysts are familiar with it which makes collaboration much easier. Also, most
modeling tools support BPMN which makes it much easier to share and edit if even using
different software. All the together makes BPMN the most popular business process modeling
technique at the moment.

2. SWOT analysis of CC Music
B. Opensource software comparison
Factors to consider in software selection;
˲ What companies are involved in producing the package
˲ How many companies are already using the package? ˲
How many software companies can configure the package? ˲
What is the history of the package? ˲
Is the package built upon open standards? ˲ How is the fit with other packages? ˲
What kind of standardization does the package represent? ˲
Is customization of the package necessary? ˲
Is there an accessible knowledge base for the implementation and exploitation of the package? ˲
What are the costs of switching to an alternative package?
˲ What are the implications of postponing a decision to adopt? In what direction is the package evolving?

And is our company headed the same way?
When you buy packaged software you join its network
Take a long-term perspective: Look ahead but reason back.
When choosing packaged software, there is safety in numbers.
Focus on compatibility and beware of false gold.
Choose a software package with accessible knowledge
Choose packaged software with the right type of standardization
Reputation
Does the software have a good reputation for performance and reliability? Here, word of
mouth reports from people whose opinion you trust is often key. Some open source
software has a very good reputation in the industry, e.g. Apache web server, højloftet,
Compiler Collection (GCC), Linux, Samba etc. You should be comparing best of
breed open source software against its proprietary peers. Discussing your plans with
someone with experience of using open source software, and an awareness of the
packages you are proposing to use, is vital.
Ongoing effort
Is there clear evidence of ongoing effort to develop the open source software you are
considering? Has there been recent work to fix bugs and meet user needs? Active projects
usually have regularly updated web pages and busy development email lists. They usually
encourage the participation of those who use the software in its further development. If
everything is quiet on the development front, it might be that work has been suspended or
even stopped.
Standards and interoperability
Choose software which implements open standards. Interoperability with other software
is an important way of getting more from your investment. Good software does not
unnecessarily reinvent the wheel, or force you to learn new languages or complex data
formats.
Support (Community)
Does the project have an active support community ready to answer your questions
concerning deployment? Look at the project’s mailing list archive, if available. If you
post a message to the list and receive a reasonably prompt and helpful reply, this may be
a sign that there is an active community of users out there ready to help. Good
practice suggests that if you wish to avail yourself of such support, you should also be
willing to provide support for other members of the community when you are able.
Support (Commercial)
Third party commercial support is available from a diversity of companies, ranging from
large corporations such as IBM and Red Hat, to specialist open source organizations such
as Canonical and Sirius, to local firms and independent contractors.
Version
This study source was downloaded by 100000836008724 from CourseHero.com on 04-11-2022 15:24:59 GMT -05:00

When was the last stable version of the software released? Virtually no software,
proprietary or open source, is completely bug free. If there is an active development
community, newly discovered bugs will be fixed and patches to the software or a new
version will be released; for enterprise use, you need the most recent stable release of the
software. There is, of course, always the option of fixing bugs yourself, since the source
code of the software will be available to you. But that rather depends on your (or your
team’s) skill set and time commitments.
Version 1.0.
In open source, there is no convention as to the significance of a 1.0 version number. A
program with a version number below 1.0 may be suitable for production use.
Conversely, a product with version number of 1.0 or above may not be. Criteria other
than version number must be the guide here.
Documentation
Open source software projects may lag behind in their documentation for end users, but
they are often better with their development documentation. You should be able to trace a
clear history of bug fixes, feature changes, etc.
Skill set
Consider the skill set of yourself and your colleagues. Do you have the appropriate skills
to deploy and maintain this software? If not, will you employ third party contractors or
will you implement a training plan to match your skills to the task? Remember, this is not
simply true for open source software, but also for proprietary software. These training
costs should be included when comparing TCOs for different products.
Project Development Model
Open source development should not be chaotic, although it can sometimes look that
way. An open source project should have a very clear development process that describes
how contributions are made and how they are evaluated for inclusion. It should also
describe how contributors investing considerable resource in customisations can become
a part of, or influence, the project management. This is to reassure significant
contributors that their contributions will remain valuable to them in the future. In some
projects there is a formal structure governing this kind of development, in others the
structure is fluid, in both cases the rules of engagement need to be clear.
Licence
Arguably, open source software is as much about the licence as it is about the
development methodology. Read the licence. Recognised open source licences have well
defined conditions for your contribution of code to the ongoing development of the
software or the incorporation of the code into other packages. If you are not familiar with
these licences or with the one used by the software you are considering, take the time
to clarify conditions of use.
