Assessment 3 is for all BEM3033 students, and BEM3033A students who are NOT seeking the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (ICAEW) accreditation. Accounting students seeking ICAEW accreditation need to undertake the BEM3033A Exam.


The assessment is an individual assignment which requires you to analyse and report on an organizational case. We are asking you to take on the role of a consultant that that has been commissioned by the case company to produce a 2,250 word (+/- 10%) analysis report.

In each of the BEM3033 lectures and seminar sessions, we have provided you with the models, theories and frameworks employed in strategic analysis. We have provided you with the opportunity to apply these to your chosen organisations in building your own case study for Assessment 2. Through this exercise you have gained a clearer understanding of strategic management processes as applied to your chosen organisation.

Remember though, all organisations are different and those organisations that are successful are those whose management teams are aware of, through constant scanning and sensing, the external environment. They understand what their organisations are capable of and are able to adapt their organisations to counter external challenges.

The Brief

With CEO Zillah Byng-Thorne due to step down, sometime in 2023, Future plc faces an uncertain future. As a consultant commissioned by the case company you have been tasked to produce a report for the incoming CEO. The report must identify changes that need to be made over the next 5 years that will help Future plc to achieve sustained long-term growth.

Your report must:

  1. Utilize module models and frameworks to discuss Future’s current business strategy and strategy delivery methods. Critically appraise this strategy in relation to Future plc’s internal and external environments, highlighting the problems which might be considered to be tractable, wicked, or soft problems.
  • With reference to the response given to (1) above, provide a detailed assessment of the most significant threats and opportunities that can be identified in relation to the sustainable growth of Future plc’s global business.
  • In response to ONE of the conclusions identified in your response to question 2 please provide a detailed strategic recommendation for the business. Provide a justification and substantiation for this recommendation and an explanation of any relevant changes to the organisation’s structure, systems, people, processes, and culture that might be required to further this option.

Assessment/Learning Objectives:

This assessment will assess your ability to:

  • Diagnose an organisation’s situation by critically analysing its external and internal environments.
  • Apply a range of module theories and frameworks for describing and setting an organisational direction.
  • Evaluate different strategic options using objective criteria to support and justify recommended decisions and use these skills in case study discussions to research real world organisations.
  • Discuss how strategy is delivered and the implementation tools and techniques which are used in different contexts.
  • Develop strategic analyses based on case material, desk research and research in the marketplace.
  • Identify the problems discussed as either complex but tractable problems, truly wicked or soft problems.
  • Manage time efficiently in preparing for learning activities and to work independently within a limited timeframe to complete a specified task.

How can I prepare for this Assessment?

  • We suggest that you read ‘A Guide to Case Study Analysis’ posted on ELE.
  • You should also reflect upon the feedback that your received for Assessment 2.
  • Become familiar with the industry you are reporting on.
  • Read any relevant academic sources that can support your understanding of the dynamics in the industry you are analysing.

What is included in the word count?

The following content is NOT included in a final word count

  • Front cover sheet
  • Rubric directly reproduced from the Module Handbook or assessment brief
  • Contents page
  • Executive summary
  • Titles and subtitles, including titles of tables, charts, figures and other forms of data presentation.
  • Reference lists / bibliography
  • Appendices

The following IS included in the final word count:

  • Main body of text
  • Words used in tables, charts, figures and other forms of data presentation
  • In text quotations
  • Footnotes and endnotes

Can I use screen shots?

You must not utilise screen shots in your report, unless you are importing an image that you have created in another software package. There are three reasons why you should NOT use screen shots.

  1. Screen shots are rarely of good quality. Redraw them yourself and cite the source.
  2. You should be adapting the material you are utilising from other sources to fit to the case study. Drawing your own versions of academic frameworks and models is a marker of your ability as a competent strategic analyst. Don’t forget to acknowledge visual sources using citations.
  3. When a marker sees a screen shot it immediately draws their attention to the word limit and raises questions about the length of the assignment. Every year a small number of student reports are penalised for exceeding the word limit (i.e. the marker stops marking at the point the word limit +10% is reached). Markers will check the number of words within screen shots as a point of principle to ensure that no student gains an unfair advantage.

Do you have any advice about the presentation of our report?

  • Your report should be professionally presented as a business report, not an essay.
  • We expect to see visualisations of your analysis that utilises the frameworks you have been introduced to on the module.
  • There is an idiom in the English language: “a picture can speak a thousand words”.
  • APA 7th must be used for all references.
  • Your Executive Summary will not be included in the word count. So make the most of this opportunity to introduce the case, set out the context for your report and summarise your main findings and recommendations.
  • Figures, tables and illustrations can be presented in the main text but should be used judiciously.
  • Appendices will not be included in the word count but again, should be used judiciously to support the main report and not to supplement it.
  • Don’t forget to use the checklist of destruction included in the Assessment 2 brief, which contains a helpful checklist of things to avoid.
