EBP Brief Project – Final Paper

Due Jul 29 by 11:59pm Points 25 Submitting an external tool
Making a clinical decision includes three components: 1) consideration and synthesis of scientific
research; 2) patient preferences and concerns; and 3) clinical judgment and experience.
Your evidence-based decision report must include at least 4 portions: 1. Clinical scenario or case
study of a patient with a voice or upper airway/laryngeal disorder; 2. Clinical question using ASHA’s
PICO format; 3. Background information and Literature review; 4. Clinical decision including
recommendations, hypothetical goals, and prescription of treatment. You may have additional
sections per your unique structure and style.
Overall, your report will demonstrate a sequence of thought and ideas to reach a conclusion. Your
essay will begin with an original clinical case study with a voice or airway disorder and a potential
treatment approach. You will then review and summarize the evidence you researched. The report
will conclude with you revealing and explaining your decision. Essentially, you are explaining an
argument to whether or not a treatment approach will work with your case.
Specific guidelines for the final draft are as follows:
Length: approximately 4 to 6 pages, double spaced, in 12 point Times New Roman font;
Style: adheres to APA guidelines including appropriate headings, in-text citations, and
reference page;
Grammar and mechanics: follows conventional writing guidelines and practices for
academic and professional writing including professional and scholarly voice or tone;
Audience: you should not only write for the instructor. Pretend that you have been
invited to speak at a state or related professional conference regarding “real world”
cases. All content for each section is expected to be written in complete sentences and
in third person.
This is the expectation for the final draft. Poor work and general lack of effort will be reflected in
your credit for any portion of this assignment. While this should go without saying, this is an
individual assignment. While I encourage you to get feedback from peers, your papers should be
unique in case, approach, style, and decision. While I am aware that some of you will select similar
voice disorders, this assignment is excellent to determine who is plagiarizing and conducting other
forms of academic dishonesty. You will be required to submit a draft of your paper through “Turn It
In” on Canvas.
Specific directions for the mandatory sections are described below.
Clinical scenario or case study: Should be approximately 500 words. Must be a patient with a
diagnosed voice disorder or related upper airway laryngeal condition. There is no stipulation
whether the case must be an adult or child. If you select an organic disorder, you will have to
address the medical or surgical approaches and if the patient has undergone these procedures or
not. Part of the case or situation may be that they wish to avoid surgery unless the condition is lifethreatening. You should identify at least one strategy or therapeutic technique/program/strategy
that you suspect may benefit the patient. Of most importance is that you create this case study or
clinical scenario. Of course, you are expected to research and highlight common findings from
other cases; however, this case is to be original and not from any additional source. Draw upon
your own clinical experiences and be creative. The best cases are those that seem to jump out of
practice and into the classroom.
Clinical question: You should formulate a specific clinical question using the ASHA PICO format.
Please review your notes and information from your research classes including evidence-based
practice. You might find the ASHA website helpful. There are various ways to format this section.
This section is fairly direct and concise. As such, there is no recommended word limit.
Background information and literature review: Often, even the most competent of audiences
require a review of information. This includes definitions, clinical concepts, and the like. You will
address the disorder and the treatment approach in the background information as well as your
overall intent for the report. (No, it cannot be because you had to for class.) In the literature review,
you will summarize your findings from empirical, peer-reviewed evidence. There should be few if
any additional types of sources in the literature review other than journal articles. Depending upon
how you wish to construct your analysis and synthesis, you might introduce an article and then
summarize the findings regarding the approach and the population. You should occasionally note
limitations of individual studies as well as gaps in the body of literature as a whole. As you will
probably discover, there may not be sufficient evidence for your specific question. When this
occurs, you will need to explain why you considered the evidence as part of your decision. As
some topics and approaches will have a plethora of articles and resources and others will not, a
general recommendation is to have no less than 5 to 10 articles for your literature review.
Depending upon the breadth of information available and what you select, you may have to go into
specific detail about each article. This section should contain a summarized conclusion whether or
not and how the evidence answers your question. For your final references page, you will include
sources utilized for both background information and literature review.

Clinical decision: After summarizing your findings, you will answer your clinical question posed
above. In addition, you will discuss specific recommendations, hypothetical goals, activities, or
prescription of treatment. You are to also refer to the patient’s preferences and your own clinical
judgment to help influence your decision. Your decision should include whether or not to implement
the therapeutic strategy or technique with any reservations or modifications. If you discuss specific
activities or products, please reference these in-text as well as in the references. Essentially, you
are giving your audience an overview of what speech therapy for this case would look like.
